Synopsis

Tired of scaring humans every October 31 with the same old bag of tricks, Jack Skellington, the spindly king of Halloween Town, kidnaps Santa Claus and plans to deliver shrunken heads and other ghoulish gifts to children on Christmas morning. But as Christmas approaches, Jack's rag-doll girlfriend, Sally, tries to foil his misguided plans.

Halloween Town is a fantasy world populated by various monsters and supernatural beings associated with the eponymous holiday. Jack Skellington, the well-respected Pumpkin King, leads the town in organizing its annual celebrations. This year however, Jack is weary of the same routine and longs for something new. Upon discovering trees containing doors to other holiday-themed worlds, Jack stumbles through the one leading to Christmas Town and is fascinated by the unfamiliar holiday. Jack returns home and shares his discovery with his friends and neighbors, but they struggle to grasp the concept of Christmas, although they relate to its ruler, Santa Claus, or "Sandy Claws" as Jack mistakenly dubs him. After several futile attempts at finding a way to rationally explain Christmas, Jack decides to "improve" the holiday instead. He announces that Halloween Town will take over Christmas this year and assigns Christmas-themed jobs, such as singing carols, making presents and building a sleigh pulled by skeletal reindeer, to various residents. Sally, the feminine creation of local mad scientist Doctor Finkelstein, experiences a vision predicting that their efforts will end disastrously. Jack, whom she secretly loves, dismisses her warnings and instructs her to make a Santa Claus suit for him. He tasks mischievous trick-or-treating trio Lock, Shock and Barrel with abducting Santa; however, he orders them not to involve their superior Oogie Boogie, a bogeyman with a passion for gambling and Jack's long-time rival, in their plot. When Lock, Shock and Barrel bring Santa to Halloween Town, Jack tells him that he will take care of Christmas this year and orders the trio to keep Santa safe. However, they disobey Jack's orders and bring Santa to Oogie Boogie, who plots to play a game with Santa's life at stake. As Jack departs to deliver presents in the real world, Sally, after failing to stop him beforehand, attempts to rescue Santa from Oogie Boogie, only to be captured herself. Jack's Halloween-themed presents terrify the real world's populace, who contact the local authorities and are instructed to lock down their homes for protection. The military is alerted and Jack is shot out of the sky, leading Halloween Town's populace to believe he is dead. It is revealed that he survived and has crashed into a nearby cemetery. Bemoaning the trouble that he has caused, Jack realizes he nonetheless enjoyed the experience and that it gave him new ideas for celebrating next Halloween, reigniting his love for the holiday. Upon returning home, Jack rescues Santa and Sally, confronts Oogie Boogie and defeats him by unraveling a thread holding his cloth form together, causing all of the insects inside Oogie Boogie to spill out and reduce him to nothing. Though displeased with Jack for his foolish actions and not listening to Sally earlier, Santa makes amends with him and resumes his yearly duties, replacing Jack's presents with genuine ones and saving Christmas. All of Halloween Town celebrates Jack's return. Santa brings a snowfall to the town, thereby bringing the Christmas spirit upon it, while Jack and Sally finally declare their love for each other.

Content Warnings

⭐ IMDb Parents Guide 🛡️ Common Sense Media

a dog dies
spoiler Jack's dog Zero is a ghost. But he starts out as a ghost and we don't ever see him harmed.
someone is sexually assaulted
Yes
animals are abused
spoiler The Easter Bunny is kidnapped in one scene. In the "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" number, a bug is also seen being tormented (and eventually eaten off-screen), but there's nothing too far beyond this.
a cat dies
spoiler A cat is launched from the lid of a trash can, but it survives and is seen again in later scenes.
a pet dies
spoiler Zero, Jack's pet dog, is a ghost. However, we never see him as a non-ghost, and it's possible that he was never a living dog at all.
there's dog fighting
Yes
there's a dead animal
spoiler There are skeletons/spirits of several different animals, as well as depictions of a dead turtle, bat, and rat. Not very graphic at all.
a horse dies
spoiler There are no horses in this movie.
an animal is sad
spoiler Zero the ghost dog tends to mirror Jack's emotions. There are several scenes where Jack is distraught and Zero looks sad in response. However, Zero is never sad for an extended period of time, and he has plenty of happy moments too.
rabbits are harmed
spoiler The Easter Bunny is kidnapped and frightened, but is not injured.
there are spiders
spoiler Spiders are among Oogie Boogie's animal familiars. Residents of Halloween Town are shown using spiders as decorative bows.
a dragon dies
spoiler Dragons are not seen.
there are bugs
spoiler Oogie Boogie is filled with live insects, among other creepy crawlies
there are snakes
spoiler The villain has many small animal minions or familiars, including snakes. There is also a large boa constrictor-like snake that lives in Halloween Town and has an indiscriminate appetite.
an animal dies
spoiler A caged cartoon insect/grasshopper is eaten by the movie's villian. A quick close up on the cage afterwards shows some green slime (presumably guts) in the cage.
someone leaves without saying goodbye
Yes
there's child abuse
spoiler Not a child, no, but Sally's maker is abusive (not physically) and may hit close to home in this category.
there's abusive parents
spoiler No physical abuse, but Dr. Finklestein is a very controlling parent and is sometimes verbally harsh.
someone gets gaslighted
spoiler Dr. Finklestein is abusive towards Sally. I cannot remember if there's explicit gaslighting but I know that if parental abuse is a trigger it is best to skip those scenes.
someone is stalked
spoiler I mean, some viewers interpret Sally's behavior toward Jack in the beginning of the movie as romantic stalking, but it's never addressed.
there's domestic violence
spoiler Sally is held hostage by her creator.
there's addiction
Yes
someone uses drugs
spoiler there is an implication that the films love interest uses some sort of drug in somebodys food
sexual assault on men is a joke
spoiler Probably not intended this way but Oogie Boogie gets creepy around Santa in a way that’s played for comedy. At one point he recites lines from the Betty Boop short The Old Man of the Mountain. In the context of that short, these lines were used to sexually harass Betty Boop.
someone is drugged
spoiler Sally escapes from Dr. Finkelstein (her creator) by drugging his soup to make him fall asleep.
someone is restrained
Yes
someone's mouth is covered
spoiler Santa's mouth is covered during the scene where he has been kidnapped.
there are hangings
spoiler In the opening scene several skeletons are seen hanging from a tree
someone struggles to breathe
spoiler Twice. The first instance is when Sally is making soup, and wheezes after adding one of the ingredients. The second instance is played for laughs; Shock gets mad at Lock for not listening to her, and begins strangling him. He starts choking for a few seconds, and they get in a fight. Both of the instances are very brief, and have no lasting damage/are fairly easy to miss.
somebody is choked
spoiler Shock briefly chokes Lock, but it's cartoonish and brief and part of their scuffle.
someone falls down stairs
spoiler The Mayor does. Made worse by the fact that his voice actor died from falling in real-life.
someone falls to their death
spoiler In this scene, we don't see the impact of Sally hitting the ground, but we do hear it. There are also a few falls from high places, such as in the scene where Jack's sleigh crashes, but there are no deaths from falling.
Someone becomes unconscious
spoiler Dr. Finkelstein falls asleep after drinking soup that had been drugged.
there's genital trauma/mutilation
Yes
someone is buried alive
spoiler No, but in the song “Kidnap the Santa Claus” there are mentions of burying Santa alive
there's body horror
spoiler The residents of Halloween Town provide plenty of body horror, most of it mild and comedic. A monster clown takes off his face, revealing a black void underneath. A ragdoll stuffed with leaves can detach her limbs and sew them back on. A vampire briefly pulls his eye out of its socket. If there's one example that's actually disturbing, it's Oogie Boogie getting his burlap skin ripped off, exposing the writhing mass of bugs underneath.
someone is burned alive
spoiler Well technically, yes but it's only in the opening musical number and he immediately puts himself out in the town square fountain.
there's cannibalism
spoiler Not exactly. If you count the film’s main antagonist, Oogie Boogie, he is a scary bag creature filled with bugs inside him. There are scenes that feature him consuming other insects.
there's torture
spoiler Santa Claws is tortured by Oogie Boogie in his chamber, but is later rescued by Sally.
there's amputation
spoiler Undead characters (especially Sally) take off their limbs/body parts at times.
someone is crushed to death
spoiler Arguably yes. The villain turns into a bug and the bug is stepped on. It's not clear if the character is actually dead or just temporarily gotten out of the way, since the Halloween characters are already dead for the most part.
someone breaks a bone
spoiler Jack, a living skeleton, gets his jaw knocked off at one point, but easily pops it back into place. He also uses one of his own ribs to play fetch with his dog.
there's eye mutilation
spoiler A vampire pulls out his eye before quickly putting it back in again
there's decapitation
spoiler Jack takes his head off sometimes but it doesn't hurt him as he's a skeleton.
heads get squashed
spoiler No, but Jack takes off his own head at one point.
there's shaving/cutting
spoiler A teddy bear is sliced open with a scalpel
hands are damaged
spoiler Hands come off but they aren’t damaged, sally can just sew them back on.
there's finger/toe mutilation
Yes
a kid dies
spoiler There are several dead children, but we don't see them die, they're dead from the beginning.
a non-human character dies
Yes
someone dies
Yes
someone sacrifices themselves
Yes
a major character dies
spoiler The antagonist, Oogie Boogie is killed at the end of the film
A child's dear toy is destroyed
spoiler Some toys are damaged, but no explicit destruction and they don't have much sentimental value as far as I know.
someone is kidnapped
spoiler Santa gets kidnapped, but he makes it out okay
a parent dies
Yes
there are clowns
spoiler One of the residents of Halloween Town is a clown who can remove his own face (his head is completely hollow underneath). He isn't malicious though.
there are shower scenes
spoiler No showering or bath taking, but Lock, Shock, and Barrel have a walking bathtub that they often use as transportation.
there's ghosts
spoiler It's a Halloween-themed movie, so yes, there are some ghosts. They're very cartoony (and there's even a ghost dog that's pretty cute), so they're probably not going to be that scary unless you have a severe phobia of ghosts.
someone is possessed
spoiler There are demons and spirits seen (as well as demon-like characters), but they never possess anyone.
there are jump scares
spoiler The scene where Jack scares Lock, Shock, and Barrel is mostly played for laughs, but it is rather sudden. I tend to be easily startled and I've always thought that part was more funny than scary, but I understand why it can be considered a jumpscare.
there are razors
Yes
there's spitting
spoiler Oogie Boogie briefly spits something out at one point, I believe.
someone vomits
spoiler Technically - no one v* BUT the fountain in the center or Halloween Town...kinda is? It's like a lizard creature holding its throat and has green water that flows through its mouth because it's a fountain. It has never bothered me, but I figured I'd put this up.
someone is eaten
spoiler A character is swallowed by a (friendly) snake, but emerges unharmed off-screen. Oogie Boogie eats a frightened bug off-screen and burps out the cage it was in.
there is copaganda
spoiler Cops appear briefly at one point (though only the bust of one answering a phone), but are antagonistic.
there's smoke or haze
spoiler There is thick fog that causes no harm except a very brief delay to their plans.
there's a mental institution scene
spoiler Santa briefly refers to Halloween Town as an "insane asylum", but there are no explicit visuals of any mental institutions.
electro-therapy is used
spoiler Jack turns on an electric chair in one scene, but nobody is in it.
there's a hospital scene
spoiler There is a laboratory, though, but it doesn't closely resemble a hospital.
needles/syringes are used
spoiler Sewing needles, but still needles
someone dies by suicide
spoiler Sally intentionally jumps from a high place in one scene, though she has no suicidal intentions; she is simply trying to leave a building. See "does someone fall to their death?" for more details.
there's misophonia
Yes
reality is unstable or unhinged
spoiler Multidimensional stuff
there's a claustrophobic scene
spoiler There's a scene where Lock, Shock, and Barrel shove Santa down a narrow chute, which I can see being pretty intense for those who are claustrophobic. This scene is about a minute long, and we see some visuals from inside the chute as well.
there's dissociation, depersonalization, or derealization
spoiler The main character starts to lose sense of who he is, deciding that instead of being the face of Halloween he wishes to be the face of Christmas. He changes everything in his life to be Christmas just to realize he missed his old self.
someone self harms
Yes
shaky cam is used
spoiler Two blurry shots, however; one when Jack crashes into a sign and becomes slightly dazed, and another when Santa is let out of a bag. Both of these visuals only last a few seconds and are not very intense.
there's flashing lights or images
spoiler In one sequence, Jack covers an electric chair with christmas lights and turns it on, causing many of the bulbs to burst in flashes
there are sudden loud noises
Yes
there's screaming
spoiler “Everybody scream! Everybody SCREAM! In our town of Halloween!” This is basically Screaming People: The Movie. If screams really bother you that much I’m not sure what you should do. With that said, some instances are bigger than others. In particular, some screams during the opening musical number I just mentioned, various incidents of Santa screaming in Oogie Boogie’s lair, Jack screaming at Lock, Shock, and Barrel, Oogie Boogie screaming at Santa, and the screams of people who received scary Christmas presents.
a baby cries
spoiler Children yes, not babies
someone is watched without knowing
spoiler Jack Skellington is watched by Sally in the graveyard scene, however it is cartoonish and reasonable because Jack is singing. Another scene is when Jack is in the Christmas world and he goes into the children’s bedroom and watches them sleep, which can be more distressing because it’s an adult watching children sleep.
the fourth wall is broken
Yes
there is a baby or unborn child
Yes
there are homophobic slurs
spoiler No, though there is a non-derogatory usage of the word "queer" in one of the songs.
there's fat jokes
spoiler In the scene where Santa is being brought to Halloween Town, his captors briefly refer to him as large and heavy. There are also a few other characters who are fairly rotund in shape and their body types are used as a mild visual gag (the Mayor has a few brief instances of this), but there is nothing too bad.
someone is misgendered
spoiler No, but Lock, Shock, and Barrel are sometimes collectively referred to as "Oogie's Boys", despite Shock being female. It is not done maliciously at all.
there's ableist language or behavior
spoiler Barrel is sometimes made fun of for being unintelligent, but there aren't really any ableist references.
an LGBT person dies
spoiler There are no known LGBT+ characters in the movie.
someone says the n-word
spoiler Who said yes wtf 💀
a minority is misrepresented
spoiler Anti-Asian caricatures with slits for eyes briefly appear. Oogie Boogie is Black-coded and is portrayed as a cruel, scary, and somewhat sexualizing villain. Finklestein is the “disabled villain” trope and the only character with a confirmed disability.
someone speaks hate speech
Yes
there's antisemitism
spoiler Witch archetype with pointed black hats and large noses (imagery rooted in medieval antisemitism). Most people aren’t aware of the connotations but they exist.
the black guy dies first
spoiler Most characters in this movie are monsters/creatures, so they don't really have races. The closest thing I can think of is a character with a black voice actor who is the only known death in the movie, but this was likely a coincidence.
there's a large age gap
spoiler Between Jack and Sally, although it's only implied. Jack is implied to be as old as the concept of Halloween itself, and no one knows how old Sally is.
religion is discussed
spoiler Christmas and Easter are present, but not in an overtly religious manner. The farthest it goes is depicting Santa Claus, who is based on Saint Nicholas.
there's demons or Hell
spoiler Not mentioned by name but there is a devil-themed character and various undead entities.
there are incestuous relationships
spoiler No, but Sally and Dr. Finkelstein's relationship is ambiguous; it could be either father and daughter or husband and wife. The line is blurred uncomfortably at times.
there is sexual content
spoiler In one scene, Oogie Boogie tries to get somewhat sexual with Sally as he finds her leg sticking out, but it’s one of her removed limbs in which she used as a decoy distraction to rescue Sandy Claws. Oogie Boogie is shown to tickle her leg and make weird noises that indicate that he’s into her.
someone is sexually objectified
spoiler Sally does this to herself to distract Oogie at a key moment.
someone has a chronic illness
spoiler Dr Frankenstein is wheelchair bound
Santa (et al) is spoiled
spoiler In the setting of this movie, Santa Claus and other popular elements of Christmas (e.g. flying reindeer, Santa's elves, Santa's workshop, Santa's Sleigh) are all real.
a plane crashes
spoiler No planes, but a flying sleigh does crash
a car crashes
spoiler A sleigh does, though
a person is hit by a car
spoiler The Mayor is knocked over by a snowcat, but it's harmless and not at all graphic. It's extremely brief.
someone drowns
spoiler "I'm drowning in my tears" is a lyric to one of the songs, but nobody drowns.
there's gun violence
spoiler Unless you count cannons.
there's blood/gore
spoiler The movie is animated rather than live action, and there is no realistic gore. A character loses some of her limbs on two occasions, but she is a Frankenstein's monster-esque/rag doll-like character, and none of this causes her any pain or distress. Her limbs are sewn back on. There is no blood because she is made of leaves.
